In short
Usually not. Today most people are assessed with blood-test scores and scans. A biopsy is kept for unclear cases.
A biopsy takes a tiny piece of liver with a needle. It gives detailed information but carries small risks such as pain or bleeding.
Your specialist may suggest one if test results disagree, if another liver disease is suspected, or for a clinical trial.
