Can fatty liver turn into cirrhosis or cancer?

In short

It can, in a small share of people, usually over many years. The risk is mainly in people who already have advanced scarring.

Cirrhosis means the liver is badly scarred. It can lead to fluid in the belly, bleeding, confusion and liver cancer.

People with cirrhosis need a liver ultrasound about every 6 months to find cancer early, when it is easier to treat.

Treating the cause early, by losing weight, controlling diabetes and avoiding alcohol, lowers the risk.
